Event Coordinator’s Report

21 July, 2008

TORRID:  (1) parched with the heat of the sun.  (2) passionate;  ardent.

Either definition is an appropriate usage of the term “torrid” to describe Saturday’s first Club Fun Fly of the season.  Although the decision to hold the event in the afternoon to coincide with the start of the monthly meeting seemed a good idea time, when it was 96 degrees in the proverbial shade, it took a whole lot of convincing to help me accept the idea as a good one!  As a matter of fact, I’m still ruminating on the thought.  I don’t think it will happen again.

Up front I want to express my appreciation to Susan and Roger Edwards, Billy Graham, Chuck Adamo and, Bobby Warden for their willingness to withstand both the heat of the sun and the spectators in the pavilion, for their participation in the event.  A special thanks to Larry Jasmann and Ray Stinchcomb for their efforts in serving as timers for the affair.  Manning the hot dog cooker was our own renowned chef John Bogdon.  The dogs were as good as ever, thanks John.  While the non-flying jobs oft go unnoticed, without them the event would never happen.

We started out with the idea of flying two rounds of five tasks each but didn’t fly the second round as time and temperature dictated otherwise.  Still, I will be bold enough to say those who flew enjoyed the time.  However, there were two pilots who took airplanes home to continue the enjoyment at the repair table while repairing the minor dings of landing gear being removed from their planes.  I will have to admit the variable winds we experienced made flying a bit more challenging then we normally see.

Of more memorable note during the competition, several items come to mind.  I was impressed by the seeming “reckless abandon” demonstrated by Billy’s flying style when on the clock.  He is truly a flying force with which to be reckoned when on the flight line.  Susan’s stick with it till it’s done attitude made doing this event worthwhile as it reminded me these activities are for us to enjoy ourselves.  Chuck gave us several memorable approaches and touch –n- goes that surely improved his flying skill and impressed the crowd.  Roger proved that continuous loops and rolls can be done with a high-winged trainer gracefully.  Perhaps not quite as quickly as Bobby’s KAOS but, nonetheless done.  Speaking of Bobby’s KAOS, he flew it well and consistently.  Nice flying Bobby!

Looking forward, September 27 will be the next event.  The 20th is the Saturday following the Club meeting and is the Club’s Cub and Bipe Day.  Looks like September is shaping up to be a good month activity-wise.  Tasks for the September date will be announced shortly to peak our interest in joining the event as a flyer.

Thanks again for those who made this happen by reason of their participation.
